June 11 dinner meeting at Schuy’s house

On June 11, we celebrated the beginning of summer with dinner at Schuy Wood’s house.  Our speaker was the Honorable Calvin R. Tucker, chair of the Philadelphia Black Republican Council.   A Republican activist, ward leader, and legislative candidate, Tucker defeated a Montgomery County millionaire to be elected delegate to the 2012 Republican National Convention.

Linda Wolfe Bateman, R.I.P.

Our Trustee and former Secretary, Linda Wolfe Bateman died in December.  She served the Republican Party as candidate for Register of Wills, candidate for State Representative, ward leader and committeeperson.   She is survived by her children, Maria, Michael, Matthew, Maurice and Margaret.   Her husband Anthony died in 2005.  Contributions in her memory should be made to the American Cancer Society Relay to Life.

Every two or three months we will be gathering for dinner and a speaker.  On July 17, we met at Cin Cin an excellent restaurant in Chestnut Hill.

On January 15, under strong winter sun and cold air, we gathered to honor the memory of Frank Galioto, vice president of the Germantown Republican Club and director of constituent services for Councilman Frank Rizzo.  By the bench are Frank’s family.  The bench is located outside Chestnut 7, 8201 Germantown Avenue.  After the dedication, the Club adjourned to Chestnut 7 and later the Chestnut Hill Bocce Club to honor Frank and celebrate his memory.

False confessions, bad identifications and DNA testing

Marissa Bluestine, Esquire (second from right), Legal Director of the Pennsylvania Innocence Project addressed the Club on January 9.  She spoke about false confessions, bad identifications and the use of DNA testing to clear people who were convicted of crimes they did not commit.   This event was our first dinner meeting.  Four tmes a year we will meet for dinner and hear speakers on politics, public affairs, journalism and law.  Each dinner will be at a different restaurant in Northwest Philadelphia.  The January 9 dinner was at the Trolley Car Diner.

Our summer dinner was held June 13 at Schuy Wood’s house.  City Council candidate Joe McColgan discussed the challenges of economic growth and education for the City of Philadelphia.

Tayoun discusses politics and journalism with GRC

On March 14, the Honorable James Tayoun, publisher of The Public Record addressed the Club.   He spoke about the challenges facing the Republican Party in Philadelphia and the factionalism among local Democrats.   Mr. Tayoun formerly served as City Councilperson, State Representative and Democratic ward leader.  GRC officers Stretch Hendrie, David Richards, Carol Mack and Calvin Tucker pose with Mr. Tayoun.
